St Paul's is a church for the community.

It's your Parish Church and we hope it feels like home, a place of warmth and hospitality.

Baptism is for both adults and children and we know, for the latter, that being a parent is a big responsibility! We want to support you in your exciting, if at times exhausting, journey.

We are always willing to talk about baptism for you or your child, and the following might give you an idea of how baptism is a start of a Christian journey through life.....

Baptism was given to us by Jesus Christ, and is an outward and visible sign of his love at work in our lives.

Baptism shows us three things....

1. A Clean Start

As water removes dirt from the body, so baptism is a sign of being washed by God. It's a picture of cleansing from brokenness and sin.

"And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you, not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ."

1 Peter 3:21

2. A New Life

As the sun rises on a new day, so baptism marks our rising to a new life with Jesus. The waters of baptism show we are united with him, and share his risen life through faith.

"Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ in baptism, we joined him in his death? For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives."

Romans 6: 3-4

3. A New Family

As a uniform helps us identify someone's profession of trade, so too baptism shows that we are part of God's wider family, the Church. Baptism is the uniform of the Church. It's our mark of belonging.

"Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptised into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit."

1 Corinthians 12:13
